On strength standards

Sam came back from a week away and did her dips exactly as well as before. We don't run benchmarks at the gym. The numbers are a consequence of consistency, not a target to hit by month six.

Sam did dips today. Back after a week away.

Same dips she’s done a thousand times. Full range, controlled, plenty of force. No cueing from us, no nudging. She just got on the bars and moved well. A week off and the pattern was intact. That’s just a capability. A skill acquired that is maintained with ease. And it doesn’t disappear when your goals change. It’s not a PR or a lift to brag about. But doing it with ease says more than a 5kg bump on the squat would have.

We don’t run benchmarks at the gym. No squat 1.5x bodyweight. No bench this, pull that, deadlift by month six. The numbers are a natural consequence of consistency, sound programming choices and a person comfortable and confident in how they are moving.

Enjoy the lift. Move efficiently. Every few weeks, lift a little more, or get a few more reps, or find a bit more range, or hold a bit more control. Make it look stable. Make it look graceful. Range of motion is a function of your control, your comfort and your constraints.

Progressive overload isn’t a rule that lords over every session. It plays out across months and years. It flatlines for weeks at a time and that’s normal. And it shows up in more forms than total poundage. It could be cleaner positions, better control, holding a pattern through a week away.

None of this means stagnation or not questioning status quo. The session still has to be hard enough to ask something of you. What we’re relaxed about is how quickly the scoreboard is allowed to move, not how much work goes in. There’s no gun to your head about where you should be at eight months or four years.

Sometimes progress is what Sam did today. Showing up after a week out and moving exactly as well as before.

We celebrate the capacity for existing. Sometimes that means enjoying what you can already do, instead of counting what’s left.
