Measure fifty times, cut once
Building four cable stations from scratch meant three weeks of quiet thinking and nine design decisions — because with equipment, unlike coaching, you get to weld only once.

There is no substitute for sitting and quietly thinking about an idea.
We are building two lat-pulldown stations and two cable-row stations from scratch. Before a single piece of steel was cut, I spent about three weeks just thinking — running through, in my head, the thousands of reps our clients will do on these machines over the years, and where each one could go wrong or feel wrong.
Here are the nine decisions that came out of it.
Lever plates or guide-rod plates? Guide rod. It’s simpler, cheaper to build well, and easier to keep running.
Dual pulley or single pulley? Dual. It keeps the loading balanced and the pull honest.
Seating height. Set so the pull line is right for the range of people who’ll actually use it, not for an average that fits no one.
Welded or bent vertical member? This took five iterations before I was happy. The bent version kept introducing small alignment problems; the welded one, done right, was cleaner.
How to weld the pulley rod. Four iterations here. Getting the pulley to sit true, with no wobble under load, is fiddlier than it looks.
Spinning pulley or fixed? Fixed. Fewer moving parts to fail, and the cable behaves more predictably.
A bottom pulley for bicep curls? Yes. Cheap to add while we’re building, and it earns its keep.
Spacing between the pulley and the guide rod. Get this wrong and the cable rubs or the path feels off. Worth measuring carefully.
Vertical or horizontal bar path. Chosen deliberately for each station, to match the movement it’s meant to train.
The economics are worth stating plainly. A retail lat-pulldown machine runs 80k to 90k. About a lakh of material gets us four stations — two pulldowns and two rows — in 304-grade stainless, beefier than what you buy, with wire rope you can change yourself when it wears.
Here’s the thing that makes all this thinking non-negotiable. Coaching is iterable and dynamic — you adjust a cue, a load, a tempo, rep by rep, and you fix your mistakes in real time. Equipment isn’t like that. With equipment, you measure, or think through, fifty times — and you cut and weld only once.
