Process beats personal story

Coaches sell with personal stories, but a testimonial isn't evidence. Why a coach's process — not their transformation yarn — is what tells you whether something will work for you.

Coaches say the darnedest things to sell products and services. Personal stories do not constitute scientific evidence for something working.

It is a coach’s process that matters. The personal yarn they weave does not. The worst offenders — for whom there is a special place in hell — are those who liken eating 20 egg whites and doing push-ups, squats or bicep curls to proof of having defeated several inner demons, fought for world peace and lived a glorious, valour-filled existence. Process matters; personal stories are noise that have no bearing on why something will work for you.

Another popular narrative form is coaches arguing that one dieting strategy is better than another based on the success they experienced with one approach. The story goes: “I did Keto, IF and this, it worked for me and it can work for you too.” Personal anecdotes and touching fat-loss stories are no guarantee that a service or product will work for you. Any eating strategy can be used to arrive at a calorie deficit, a surplus, or to maintain the status quo.

The fat-loss game comes down to what combination of foods lets you eat consistently at a deficit for several weeks or months. Don’t let any talk about hormones, insulin, culture, romance, ancestry or history fool you.
